The Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work (FSW) at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant, or Associate faculty position commencing July 1, 2022. This position is located on the Brantford campus in the BSW program. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the academic year (Fall and Winter semesters), taught on-campus. These courses will be taught at the undergraduate level, though the opportunity to teach in the graduate program may also exist. The candidate will be eligible for graduate faculty status.

The FSW is located on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnaabe, and Haudenosaunee peoples. As a Faculty, we are working toward a stronger emphasis on decolonizing social work practice and education, and expect the candidate will be able to support our journey.

The FSW offers professional social work programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, and a research-focused doctoral program. We are devoted to excellence in research, creative and critical thinking, and reflexive practice. The Indigenous Field of Study (IFS) in the MSW program embraces Indigenous-based learning. We fulfill our mission by advancing multi-disciplinary and marginalized forms of knowledge. Our graduates are committed to constructively engaging and working toward transforming oppressive conditions and structures, while promoting well-being in individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

The BSW program at Laurier is a generalist program preparing students for a variety of practice contexts. Our curriculum emphasizes familiarity with micro, mezzo, and macro practices with individuals, families, and communities by examining various critical issues such as health, gender & sexuality, migration and forced displacement, poverty, violence, disability, and child welfare. While the substantive area of the candidate’s research program is open, we are seeking a colleague who can demonstrate teaching effectiveness in two main areas: 1) research methods courses and 2) practice related to individuals, families, groups, and other courses exploring micro skills development. We encourage candidates to demonstrate how their substantive area and previous teaching experiences would support and compliment a generalist BSW program, and additionally, community-engaged research initiatives within the Brantford community. We welcome a scholar who will participate in supervising and/or mentoring undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research. Finally, we are eager to welcome a colleague who embraces the concept of integrative practices[1] and applies principles of social justice in their research and teaching, and ideally, will demonstrate how their approach to program development and social work education is collaborative, student-centered, and relational.


The successful applicant will (1) hold at least one social work degree (BSW or MSW), and hold a PhD, completed, or ABD with a clear path to completion, (2) have professional, employment-based social work experience and this work should represent a meaningful amount of time (3-4 years minimum), in addition to any field placements and volunteer opportunities. (3) have an active and/or promising program of research, with a record of publication and knowledge dissemination/translation consistent with career stage and goals, and (4) have at least two years or equivalent full time teaching experience in social work with a demonstrated record of excellence. Experience teaching online is an asset.
