Position Summary

 

This position has a university-wide mandate to provide subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, locations in Kitchener and Milton and external partners including the University of Waterloo. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.

This position reports to the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management but is, in part, a shared resource with the Department of Residence, with office hours in both Waterloo and Brantford Residence Departments. Additionally, the position fosters strong connections amongst all campus student-centric departments including Dean of Student’s Offices, Students’ Union, Graduate Student Association, Student Center for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Laurier Off-Campus University Students (LOCUS), Athletics Department and Laurier International. Additionally, the successful incumbent will liaise with the University of Waterloo to create co-sponsored events designed to address students' issues related to Human Rights.

The Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management Student Liaison Specialist (SLS) will work closely with student collectives, including clubs, associations and learning groups, as well as university departments that focus on student services, to help the students better understand policies and processes that address gendered and sexual violence, discrimination, harassment, acts of hate, and misapplication of university policy.

As a dedicated resource, known and familiar to student-facing departments, the incumbent will create opportunities for collective learning, triage and/or resolution of issues as they arise and prevent escalation of cases through early intervention. As a longer-term goal, the successful candidate will develop resources to recruit, train and mentor students wanting to volunteer in the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management to address identity-based harms on campus.

 

 

Accountabilities

 

Working in close collaboration with Residence Life, the SLS will:

 

  • Provide triage services in real time to students and student-facing staff regarding incidences of harassment, discrimination, sexual and gendered violence, conflict or identity-based harms;
  • Provide detailed and expert instruction on policies and procedures, and formal and informal resolution mechanisms;
  • Provide case management support and knowledge when disclosures or complaints are raised in Residence that may be related to identity-based harms;
  • Co-facilitate restorative justice processes to address harms and provide accountability mechanisms;
  • Facilitate early resolution using strategies such as group dialogue;
  • Develop student centric materials, social media posts and resources to discuss relevant issues, and highlight supports available both internally and externally to students in need;
  • Attend student events and collectives, and serve as a resource on issues related to human rights;
  • Work collaboratively and build on-going relationships with student collectives and leaders to raise awareness, foster trust and support for the office mandate;
  • Consider safety risks when meeting with individuals experiencing harm; provide safety planning;
  • Create, coordinate and deliver educational opportunities with a particular focus on the prevention of harassment and discrimination and gendered violence, transformation and resolution of conflict, de-escalation, restoration after conflict and harm, understanding of human rights and responsibilities and responding to lateral violence;
  • Develop training materials for students and those working with students including training for LOCUS: OLC’s, Student athletes, and Residence Dons;
  • Recruit student volunteers from various clubs and associations to liaise with the OHRCM by providing peer mentorship and support related to gender-based violence, discrimination, and harassment.

  • Excellent self-care practices

  • Experience in the design and delivery of educational programs
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation and public speaking skills
  • Experience handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality and balance
  • Possession of good interpersonal skills, tact and discretion
  • Preferably identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour)
  • Human rights and related legislation knowledge would be an asset

 

This position has been deemed eligible for educational equivalencies.

Hours of Work: This is a full-time, 2-year limited term role. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to occasional business needs. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week. 

This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement, as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy). All arrangement must be approved by the direct manager. In-person attendance for events, as required to meet operational needs, is expected. On occasion, this schedule may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements. 

  

 

Compensation:

Level: F

Rate of Pay: $47.26 to $45.28 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $54.01 per hour.   

  

Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
