Position Summary
Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Manager, Teaching Excellence and Innovation, and working collaboratively with the Academic Director, other TEI team members, and institutional colleagues, the incumbent will apply their knowledge, skills, and experience toward fostering a culture of reflective and scholarly teaching to advance teaching excellence and impact student academic success at Laurier. The incumbent will engage Laurier faculty and students in educational development in a manner that is professional and positively represents Teaching Excellence and Innovation (TEI) and Teaching and Learning broadly to the university community.
The administration of faculty programming and graduate student teaching development will be a primary responsibility of the incumbent, in addition to: (1) planning, implementing, and evaluating educational development programs, services, and activities; (2) providing pedagogical, course design, and instructional skills expertise and support to individuals and departments; (3) fostering a sense of community and creating opportunities for free exchange of ideas across Laurier and its many campuses; (4) conducting classroom observations, mid-semester feedback sessions, and consultations; (5) researching and developing responsive and relevant instructional resources in varied formats; (6) engaging in and supporting educational research; and (7) staying current on the educational literature and broader trends in higher education. This position will engage in educational development in both foundational and contemporary pedagogical areas (for e.g., GenAI, assessment design, and modes of teaching and learning).This is a multi-campus position with a university-wide mandate and is based at the Brantford Campus, with up to 2 days per week at the Waterloo Campus. The incumbent provides subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, and the Milton Campus. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.
Accountabilities
General
- Broker and facilitate teaching and learning relationships, networking opportunities, and a sense of community across all campuses;
- Provide coordination and support of educational development and Teaching Excellence and Innovation activities;
- Represent Teaching Excellence and Innovation on university committees and collaborative initiatives at Laurier and the wider educational community, where appropriate
- Plan new and existing faculty activities, programs and projects for the short/long-term in keeping with the teaching and learning mission and the University’s strategic directions, in consultation with the Manager and Academic Director
- Collaborate and liaise with units across Teaching and Learning to offer pedagogical expertise to all programming as requested.
- Support initiatives across the broader Educational Development and TEI team.
- Coach faculty and other academic staff in preparing award nominations at the local (e.g. WLU Teaching Excellence Award), provincial (e.g. OCUFA) and national level (e.g. 3M) in collaboration with the Manager and Academic Director
- Network, build, and broker relationships with individuals and organizations engaged in dialogue in the advancement of teaching and learning internally and externally (e.g., Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education)
Faculty Programming
- Research, develop, and deliver services, resources, and programs (e.g., workshops, courses, guest speakers, faculty consultations, etc.) in support of teaching excellence and faculty professional development.
- Research and develop customized resources (print/digital media), workshops, and supports for faculty programming and reference.
- Engage in strategic planning for Teaching Excellence and Innovation with the Manager, Academic Director, and other Educational Development staff.
- Facilitate and support various foundational and responsive TEI initiatives and varied modes of teaching and learning delivery across the institution;
- Support the content and maintenance of the Teaching Excellence and Innovation websites and newsletters profiling resources, services, programs, and supports available to the Laurier faculty community.
- Evaluate existing programs and activities, and assess the educational and professional development needs of faculty and teaching staff at Laurier, modifying existing and developing new initiatives in response, in consultation with the Manager and Academic Director
- Support and promote faculty participation at local and inter/national teaching and learning conferences and events (e.g., grant program, proposal preparation, event promotion, consultation, etc.)
- Profile and advance teaching excellence and effective practices internally and externally.
- Contribute to the scholarship of teaching, learning, and educational development through personal and collaborative efforts (e.g., publication, conference presentations, classroom/project research, grants)
- In collaboration with other Teaching and Learning staff collaborate with departments, support units and individuals to advance a culture of teaching and learning at Laurier.
- Counsel and advise faculty on teaching and learning related matters (e.g., assessment, instructional design, evaluation of teaching)
- Advise (e.g., consultations, retreats, meetings) graduate teaching assistants, instructional assistants, faculty, academic staff, and departments on teaching and learning, matters.
- Research, design/customize, and deliver course-specific and university-wide one-time and multi-day programs, events, and workshops for graduate students in support of their teaching development;
- Participate in hiring processes; shared accountability for evaluation of performance; train and direct the work of temporary student staff within the unit (one to two), based on project and program needs involving graduate student teaching development and, as appropriate, the related programming support staff.
- Support (e.g., leadership, consultative, collaborative roles) classroom and diverse modes of delivery initiatives championed by TEI and Teaching and Learning
- Broker and mediate relationships and initiatives between and across individuals, departments, campuses, institutions, and professional associations, including coordination of the schedules and work of others.
- Demonstrate diplomacy and sensitivity in all interactions/professional practice.
- Assess the impact and effectiveness of programs and services (e.g., gathering evidence of impact from individuals with teaching responsibilities; developing evaluation tools and strategies to determine program effectiveness).
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in education or a related field
- More than six years of combined work-related experience in both teaching and educational development in a higher education setting
- Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and experience with college or university-level teaching, program planning, facilitation, consultation, course design and development, and resource development involving both foundational pedagogical areas and contemporary developments (for e.g., GenAI, assessment design, modes of teaching and learning)
- Skilled in needs assessment, project management, resource/program development, consultations, classroom observations, workshop/event delivery, and research/scholarship
- A high degree of initiative and independence combined with the ability to collaborate effectively with others (e.g., faculty, administrators, students, staff) in a politicized environment.
- Ability to maintain confidential relationships with faculty, students, and staff.
- Superior organizational, project management, communication (written and oral), and self-management skills
- Sound and current knowledge of the educational literature (e.g., teaching/learning, instructional design, assessment, student development) and an ability to apply theory to practice.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team or project setting.
- A client-oriented, research-informed, evidence-based, outcomes-centred approach to practice
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, and an awareness and use of course management systems and other educational technologies/applications used in teaching.
- Knowledge of Wilfrid Laurier University, its strategic directions, and its academic support units an asset
- Willingness to work at Laurier’s multiple campuses as required.
- Some lifting may be required in association with program and event delivery/coordination.
Hours of Work: This is a full time continuing position. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. Flexibility in hours may be required due to periods of high volume. When possible, the manager will adjust the hours so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement, as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy). All arrangement must be approved by the direct manager. In-person attendance for events, as required to meet operational needs, is expected. On occasion, this schedule may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements.
Compensation
Level: G
Rate of Pay: $51.55 - $54.49 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date to $58.92 per hour
Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
