Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Facilities Operations, under the direction of the lead hand, the incumbent performs a wide variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the University’s electrical/electronic systems, fixtures and equipment.
Responsibilities:
- Respects and responds to direction given by lead hand(s), coordinators, or management.
- Contributes and participates in the effective use of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Accesses, monitors and controls Building Automation System when required.
- Performs preventative maintenance inspections as per schedule.
- Repairs and maintains all electrical distribution systems, fixtures and equipment (i.e., distribution switchgear, motors, controls, etc.).
- Works with coordinators to maintain/repair high voltage distribution equipment.
- Recognizes electrical/electronic problems and makes repairs when necessary.
- Maintains emergency lighting/exit signage, fire alarm systems, clock systems, and other building life safety equipment.
- Installs new circuits, lighting, receptacles, etc. This may include the installation of conduit, pulling of cables and other wiring as required.
- Performs electrical repairs to appliances and equipment in kitchens, residences, offices and classrooms.
- Prepares estimates for work orders where required.
- Requests, orders or picks up required material from suppliers in order to complete the job.
- Keeps necessary records for electrical inspection and documentation for the Electrical Safety Authority’s Continuing Safety Services (CSS) Program.
- Maintains adequate records to comply with internal processes and external code requirements.
- Maintains outside lighting, including parking lot lighting installations and wall packs.
- Maintains and tests the emergency backup systems in buildings. This includes generator systems and automatic transfer switches.
- Checks and maintains UPS systems.
- Understands and complies with all departmental policies and procedures.
- Prepares any reports required for control, audit or reporting purposes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- In emergencies, performs minor duties of other trades where certification is not required and the work does not exceed own limitations.
- Flexibility in hours of work will be required to work evenings and/or weekends to accommodate work volume. Adequate notice will be provided.
- On call rotation with other department staff
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Department of Labour Certificate of Qualification (309A) -Electrician, Construction and Maintenance.
- Must possess a valid Fire Alarm Technician Certificate through the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA).
- Must possess a valid Class - G Ontario Driver’s license.
- Currently working in the electrical trade.
- Demonstrated experience as an electrician and in building maintenance related to the trade.
- Previous experience with electronic equipment and control equipment.
- Training in fall arrest and elevating platforms required.
- Ability to layout and install unique electrical systems for special projects. This will require the ability to read and work from blueprints and electrical schematics.
- Computer literacy, e.g. use of control systems, University computer system, e-mail, etc.
- Teamwork - ability to work in a team environment with a minimum of supervision. Shares information with team members. Is collaborative in dealing with customers and fellow employees.
- Customer focused - responds promptly to customer needs. Uses customer information to improve service. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers.

Hours of Work: The normal hours of work are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
Compensation:
Rate of Pay: $41.38
Working Conditions
- Physical effort: Carrying supplies, reaching, bending, stretching, heavy lifting, climbing.
- Physical environment: Varying temperatures, exposure to high voltage, fumes, chemicals and solvents, noise, dirt (including sewage waste products) and possibly infectious/toxic environment. Working in cramped quarters.
- Sensory attention: Following required codes. Attention to detail when working with electricity. Operating specialized equipment. Reading code books and blueprints.
- Mental stress: Moderate. On call in.
