Description

 

Wilfrid Laurier University is seeking a dynamic and innovative librarian to fill a part-time, Limited Term (24 months) Liaison Librarian, Social Sciences and Humanities position at the Laurier Brantford campus. Primary duties will include collection development and management, reference consultations, instruction and faculty liaison for a selection of disciplines within the Social Sciences and Humanities, including Criminology and other degree program areas, support for Wilfrid Laurier International College and other specialized programs on the Brantford campus as assigned. This position will be appointed at the Brantford campus.

The Laurier Library has a total staff of 63, including 21 librarians, and provides access to over 70,000 full-text online journals, indexes and e-books and more than 1.2 million print volumes. As part of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) 18-member Omni Group of Libraries, Laurier students, faculty and staff may use and borrow materials from collaborating university libraries across Ontario, including from local partners, the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo libraries. The Laurier Library has a strategic partnership with the Brantford Public Library to provide services and materials to users on the Laurier Brantford campus.

The Laurier Library serves over 20,000 students in a multi-campus environment at the Waterloo campus, the Faculty of Social Work at the Kitchener campus, and the Brantford campus. Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Developing and managing print and electronic collections in Faculties of Human and Social Science and/or Faculty of Library Arts for designated program areas
  • Provides research assistance and support for faculty, students and staff in assigned program areas, including providing back up coverage to other Liaison Librarians
  • Delivering in-person and online library instruction to students, faculty and staff
  • Provides proactive outreach and liaison services to promote library collections and services to the faculty and students in designated program areas
  • Develops and maintains library guides, course web pages and learning objects
  • Serves on relevant library and university committees
  • Work may include some evenings and weekend hours
  • Participates in research and/or professional activity

 

Qualifications
Required

  • ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent
  • Experience in teaching information literacy and instruction/training experience
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a reference interview
  • Experience in finding and using electronic and print resources in the social sciences and humanities
  • Recent experience providing academic reference services
  • Demonstrated ability to form collaborative relationships with diverse groups of faculty, colleagues, students, and staff
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written communication
  • Current knowledge of information technologies and their application in a library setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload and to work in a changing environment
  • Demonstrable overall understanding of current library practice, including collection management, scholarly communication, information retrieval, and information literacy
  • Strong computer literacy as well as the ability to learn new technologies independently
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility and AODA standards

 

Preferred

  • Second Master’s degree in an academic subject area
  • A degree, certificate or diploma related to criminology and/or law
  • Professional or scholarly activity
  • Recent experience providing academic reference services to support programs related to Criminology, Law/Legal sources or government information, or similar subject areas
  • Experience with collection development at an academic library
  • Experience offering support to faculty for research metrics and bibliometrics

 

Appointment and Compensation

The Liaison Librarian, Social Science and Humanities position is a part-time (23 hours/week), limited term appointment (24 months) which will be available from January 1, 2023. The appointment will be made at a level commensurate with qualifications and experience, anticipated at Librarian I or II level.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and skills.
