Position Summary:

 

We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Maintenance Technician.

Reporting directly to the Area Manager, Facilities Operation, under the day to day direction of the leadhand, the incumbent performs a variety of tasks related to the installation, maintenance and repair of University buildings, equipment and systems, as well as assisting skilled trades as required.  May participate in other duties related to Facilities Operations.


 

Accountabilities:

 

  • Respects and responds to direction given by leadhand/manager;
  • Contributes and participates in the effective use of the Quality Control System;  
  • Accesses, monitors and controls Building Automation Systems;  
  • Performs daily maintenance checks on operational equipment/mechanical rooms, completes minor repairs and reports any abnormalities;  
  • Makes leadhand/manager aware of any damage noted to building equipment;  
  • Assists skilled trades staff as required; 
  • Responds to routine and emergency trades related service calls as an initial response; 
  • Assists with access control distribution and administration as required, i.e. preparing fob and key packages and associated record keeping;  
  • Initiates, coordinates and collaborates with outside service providers and other bodies/agencies with which the University deals;  
  • Cleans boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, etc on a regular basis;
  • Tests and controls water systems and related equipment, i.e. water softeners, boilers, etc.;  
  • Performs preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems i.e., belts, filters and lubrication;  
  • Performs life safety regulatory inspections and repairs, i.e. emergency eyewash and showers; fire extinguishers;  
  • Performs plumbing installations and repairs, i.e. toilets, showers/tubs, sinks, drains, where certification is not required and it is within the training and limitations of the incumbent; 
  • Performs carpentry installations and repairs, i.e. drywall, carpeting, ceiling tile, where certification is not required and it is within the training and limitations of the incumbent;  
  • Performs electrical troubleshooting, installations and repairs where certification is not required and it is within the training and limitations of the incumbent;  
  • Performs locksmith related installations and repairs, i.e. doors, locks, closers, hardware, where certification is not required and it is within the training and limitations of the incumbent;  
  • Performs painting and patching across campus, orders materials as required; 
  • Performs furniture repairs, orders parts as required;  
  • Assists with setups and furniture removal/relocation as required;  
  • Completes appliance repairs where certification is not required and it is within the training and limitations of the incumbent;  
  • Understands and complies with all Departmental Policies and Procedures;
  • Operates equipment in accordance with safe operating procedures and reports any required repairs and servicing to the leadhand/manager immediately; 
  • Prepares any reports required for control, audit or reporting purposes;
  • Performs other related duties, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required and the work does not exceed own limitations;
  • Required to be on call as necessary.
     

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Must possess a current Gas Tech III Certificate or are in the process of obtaining;
  • Must possess or are in the process of obtaining at least one of the following a Building Systems Maintenance Certificate (SMC), Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT), Facility Maintenance Mechanic 255W, Facility System Technician 255B or equivalent;* 
  • Relevant experience and education in building HVAC, maintenance, equipment and repair;
  • Demonstrated mechanical ability to perform minor repairs to equipment;
  • Must possess a valid Class-G Ontario Driver’s license;
  • Computer literacy, e.g. use of control systems, University computer system, e-mail etc;
  • Team work - ability to work in a team environment with a minimum of supervision.  Shares information with team members.  Is collaborative in dealing with customers and fellow employees;
  • Customer focused - responds promptly to customer needs.  Uses customer information to improve service.  Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers;

*Any offer of employment will be conditional on acceptable employment reference checks and obtaining at a minimum, the SMC program within a set time period.
 

 

Compensation:

 

Hourly Rate: $28.82

 

Hours of Work:  Normal hours of work are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, 40 hours per week. Flexibility in hours of work will be required to work evenings and/or weekends to accommodate work volume.  Adequate notice will be provided.
