Position Summary
The Centre for Public Safety and Well-Being (CPSW) is within the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences. The Centre offers exciting learning opportunities through professional development programs for people working or aspiring to work in a wide range of industries, including public safety, health, wellness and well-being.
As a key member of the CPSW team, reporting to the Senior Administrative Officer in the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences on the Brantford campus of Wilfrid Laurier University, the primary role of the Project Co-ordinator is to oversee the management of the Mental Health Crisis Response Education and Applied Training program (MHCR) , identify priorities and goals, develop and execute implementation plans, and mobilize resources to meet the immediate and long-term goals of the MHCR. The Project Co-ordinator is responsible for MHCR communications, budget management, project timelines and deliverables, event coordination and the successful execution of the training related to MHCR.
The MHCR is a hybrid, scenario-based curriculum that offers an evidence-based, standardized training protocol on de-escalation and mental health crisis response for police services, with the objective to further develop de-escalation and communication strategies, mental health awareness, empathy, and cultural safety for police response to citizens in a mental health crisis. As of April 1, 2024, the Ministry of the Solicitor General has mandated that all police officers in Ontario complete this training annually in compliance with Ontario Regulation 87/24 and MHCR is mandatory as part of the basic constable training course at the Ontario Police College.
Accountabilities
PLAN/IMPLEMENT
- Identify project priorities of MHCR and develop short, medium, and long-term goals and workplans
- Anticipate and mobilize resources needed to support the goals of MHCR
- Create, monitor, and update project budgets
- Develop and implement protocols and best practices for all phases of MHCR
- Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure that projects adhere to scope, schedule, and budget
- Develop a records management system and processes to track and communicate successful program completion.
- Day to day guidance of the Registration and Administrative Coordinator and the Program Logistics Coordinator
MANAGE
- Oversee the progress of MHCR, in pursuit of meeting medium and long-term goals, by maintaining administrative and logistic processes, anticipate and problem-solve difficulties to ensure the integrity and completeness of training, and address any team issues promptly.
- Establish and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders
- Manage finances of MHCR by reconciling projected budgets against actual expenses (e.g. accessing financial information in Laurier’s Millennium and Banner online systems)
- Monitor project progress regularly to ensure project milestones are completed within allotted timelines and budgets.
- Work with management to prepare project plan, budget and schedules.
- Create and maintain data bases for the purposes of tracking activities including participation, completeness, and ministry reporting
- Maintain the MHCR website and contact information
COMMUNICATE
- Monitor and respond to MHCR emails daily
- Report project outcomes and/or risks to the appropriate channels and escalate issues, as necessary, according to project work plan
- Prepare end of fiscal financial reporting for senior management and inter-institutional agreements.
- Communicate with others in both written and oral formats including project work plans, implementation activities (with provincial police services), updates with the Ministry, daily correspondence, and final training reports
- Track and communicate records of successful program completion to police services in compliance with provincial privacy legislation.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in business of related discipline preferred.
- 3+ years of previous experience managing university or community-based projects including goal-setting, work planning, resource allocation, budgeting
- Applied knowledge of Ontario police sector is consider an asset
- An in-depth understanding of educational programming for police services would be ideal.
- Strong analytical abilities to develop innovative solutions to problems
- Demonstrated excellence in administrative and organizational skills (able to handle a multi-facetted project with competing deadlines)
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain trust and credibility and build relationships both internally and externally and with all levels of management
- Demonstrated experience with diplomacy, discretion, tact, and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proven exceptional skills in customer service and the ability to interact and communicate effectively with police services, participants, staff, and the greater community
- Experience in Continuing Education is a strong asset
- Experience with event planning/training is considered an asset
- Proficiency in word processing software (e.g. Microsoft Office 365), spreadsheets (e.g. Excel, Google Sheets), video conferencing (e.g. Zoom), registration and invoice processing systems (e.g. Destiny One, Moneris), and e-learning platform (e.g. D2L).
Hours of Work
This is a Full-time, Limited Term position with an anticipated end date of January 29, 2027. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy). In-person attendance for events, as required to meet operational needs, is expected. On occasion, this schedule may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements.
Compensation
Level: E
Rate of pay: $41.09 to $43.44 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $46.96 per hour.
Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
