Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Interuniversity Sport & Recreation Programs, the Recreation and Student Life Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day delivery and operation of a comprehensive extramurals, Laurier-specific intramurals and competitive sport clubs program that serve the needs of students at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford Campus. In conjunction with the Manager Interuniversity Sport and & Recreation Programs, the incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of planning and long term objectives, budget planning, and student engagement initiative that will enable successful recreational and competitive sport programming, that support the mission, vision, values of Wilfrid Laurier University.
The incumbent must focus on developing a student-centered programming model by recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating teams of student leaders. Ongoing analysis and monitoring of trends and service standards, with respect to specific programs, and related equipment is required. Quality programming and revenue generation are shared goals to ensure cost recovery in most program areas.
This position is responsible for keeping the web page ‘live’ through coordinating material in order to maintain its presence within the university and community populations. The position will be responsible for social media in addition to interactions with local media in regards to Golden Hawk athletics and recreation.
The Coordinator must actively promote, encourage and support the mission, vision, and values of the Department and an active living model for the campus. The success of the extramurals, intramurals and competitive sport club programs will rest on the Coordinator’s ability to respond to student needs, mentor/train student leaders and work within a diverse team of full-time and part-time/casual staff, including the Laurier Brantford-YMCA Centre staff.
Accountabilities
- Responsible for program planning, ensuring facility needs and schedules, budget monitoring, safety, publicity and promotions, registration and evaluation of Extramural Sports, Laurier-specific Intramurals and Competitive Sport Clubs;
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate teams of student staff as per health and safety requirements and specific discipline protocols;
- Plan and execute student staff training in conjunction with Manager for the programs;
- In conjunction with the Director, Athletics and Recreation and Manager, Interuniversity Sport and Recreation Programs, the Coordinator Extramurals, Intramurals and Competitive Sport Clubs is responsible for the development of long and short term objectives and action plans to maintain and improve the delivery of the programs;
- Collaborate with the Manager in the design and content of all social media accounts and promotional materials i.e. posters, pamphlets, advertisements for all programs;
- In conjunction with the Manager, assist in the policy development, systems and procedures related to extramurals and competitive sport clubs programming;
- Develop and administer individual club budgets in consultation with student leadership; approve and monitor expenditures and revenues of each club; develop, implement and evaluate risk management plan and direct initiatives for the program development.
- Host Extramural tournaments and meet obligations of Ontario Colleges Recreation Committee within the OCAA.
- Monitor student athlete academic progress providing coaches with regular updates;
- Responsible for inventory, ordering and payment of apparel, uniforms and equipment in consultation with the Coordinator, Athlete Services and Events as per contractual agreements
- Work with various academic departments to coordinate any exam proctoring for student athletes with conflicts associated with their competitive schedules;
- Maintain historical records and archives of interuniversity rosters and schedules in collaboration with the Coordinator, Communications (Waterloo Campus).
- Solicit and conduct interviews with athletes, coaches and alumni;
- Maintain social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other mediums;
- Ensure accurate archiving of athlete, game and statistical data for appropriate recall when needed.
- Organize extramural team travel and manage safety of extramural teams when travelling.
- Organize and implement Laurier-specific intramurals programs
- Establish and maintain contacts with counterpart s at other educational institutions to stay abreast of new equipment and programming trends;
Qualifications
- Qualifications required to perform this position include education, special accreditations, years and type of experience, skills and abilities.
- Undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Recreation or related field
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a post-secondary sport and sports club programs
- Proven organizational and leadership skills
- Experience in delivering performance evaluations
- Working knowledge of sport culture and technical requirements
- Experience in budget development, monitoring and evaluation
- Experience with objective setting and planning
- Understanding of dynamics of working with student leaders and volunteer coaches
- Experience in Training & Development or Sport Management is considered an asset
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and proven counselling and motivational skills
- Knowledge of the university environment an asset
- Ability to manage and motivate staff to accomplish program goals
Hours of Work
This is a Limited-term opportunity with an anticipated end date of 12/12/2026. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to Extramural team travel, host tournaments and other Athletic events throughout the year. When possible, the Manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
Compensation
- Level: E
- Rate of Pay: $42.32 - $44.74 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $48.37 per hour. Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job
