Position Summary

 

Reporting to the Manager of Women’s Basketball Operations and Head Coach and the Assistant Coach, Women's Basketball will assist with all aspects of the of the interuniversity women’s basketball program including, skill analysis and development, as well as collaborating with other coaches on team tactics and overall short and long term team strategy. The Assistant Coach, Women's Basketball will assist the Associate Director of Interuniversity Sport Programs, Manager, Women’s Basketball Operations and Head Coach and other coaching staff in the holistic student athlete experience while also assisting in the recruitment of top quality student athletes.

The Assistant Coach, Women's Basketball will assist in the Manager of Women’s Basketball Operations in the planning and supervision of the off season training program, off season interuniversity camp and act as a liaison for recruiting, academic success, fundraising, events and scouting. The Assistant Coach, Women's Basketball will also assist the Associate Director, Sr. Coordinator, & Head Coach, in, in and out of season strategy and development of student athletes on the ice, in the classroom and in the community.

 

Accountabilities

 

Assistant Coach -

• Assists with skill analysis and development, of all student athletes within the program and overall team strategy.

• Analyze and prepare film for practice, off-ice film sessions for Manager Women’s Basketball Operations.

• In conjunction with other coaches and Manager of Women’s Basketball Operations, the Lead Assistant Coach collaborates on game day planning and strategy.

• Prepares written & multimedia practice planning materials for team. 

• In consultation with the Manager, Women’s Basketball Operations & Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs, develop and implement services that appropriately support the Women’s Basketball Program, including: fundraising, student-athlete recruitment services; and student-athlete support services (academic, health & wellness, EDI, mental health, and personal wellness);

• Conduct Individual skill analyses while supporting the student athlete experience.

 

Training Program, Fundraising, Engagement and Special Event Coordination

 

• Coordination of the off season training program under the direction of the Head Coach, Coordinator High Performance Strength & Conditioning and Athletic Therapist for the off season interuniversity sport training requirements

• Assists with and schedules the training camp schedule which includes training camp meals, preseason games, residence and academic requirements.

• Assists the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs and Sr. Coordinator, Sport & Athlete Services with training and education of student athletes

• Assists with the coordination/communication of summer camp & fundraising events including community partnerships, summer camps, major gifts and Adopt a Hawk

• Carries out special projects as assigned by Manager Women’s Basketball Operations and Head Coach.

 

Athlete Recruitment, Student Athlete Development Training & Education

 

• Assists Head Coach and Sr. Coordinator, Sport & Athlete Services with student-athlete recruitment efforts through the scheduling and coordination of on campus visits with other academic units and student services within Laurier, while being in compliance with USports & OUA regulations

• In conjunction with the Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport Programs, develop and implement services that appropriately support the student athlete education (outside of the classroom) for student athletes in the community, including: seminars, workshops, education and support for BIPOC student athletes under the guidance of the university’s EDI policy; and student-athlete support services (academic, health, and personal);

• Contacts and maintains a database of up to 75 potential student athlete recruits annually.

 

 

Qualifications

 

 • Undergraduate degree plus 3 years’ experience in post-secondary basketball or Professional basketball with knowledge of up-to date coaching/teaching techniques or equivalent women’s basketball experience

• Safe Sport Certification through the NCCP required

• Knowledge and training preferred in relation to Mental Health First Aid, student athlete development, Safe Sport, Diversity & Inclusion

• Former OUA/Usports/OCAA/CCAA or NCAA student athlete in the sport of basketball

• Strong organizational skills. • Excellent communication and proven motivational skills.

• Understanding dynamics of working with student athletes. 

• Understanding of USports & OUA Procedures and Policies

• Understanding & comprehension of academic curriculum and support for student athletes an asset

• Knowledge and experience within a university athletic environment an asset

• Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, video editing software, recruiting software

• Valid driver’s license.

• Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends is required.

• The successful candidate will require a vulnerable sector check

• The successful candidate will be required to complete all necessary training as required by Wilfrid Laurier University, the Department of Athletics & Recreation and Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

• Successful Candidate will be required to submit a vulnerable sector background check

• NCCP Level II certification will be considered an asset

• Connections to local girls minor basketball organizations, and Basketball Canada considered an asset 

 

This position is eligible for Educational Equivalencies.

 

Hours of Work

 

This is a Full-time, Limited-term opportunity with an anticipated end date of April 30th 2028.

The normal hours of work are 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours may be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to periods of high volume. When possible, the manager will adjust hours to ensure no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.

 

This role requires daily in person attendance and is not eligible for a flexible work arrangement as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy).

As per Article 12.7.6, prior approval from a manager is required to return to a previous position after a Limited-Term Position.

 

Compensation

 

  • Level: D
  • Rate of Pay: $38.80 - $41.02 with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $44.35 per hour. Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job
