Reporting to the Vice Provost of Teaching and Learning, the Director of Student Success and Retention will lead a student retention and persistence strategy that is responsive to the diversity of student learners and advances the university’s ability to increase student access, support student success and reduce student attrition in a multi-campus physical space and remote/online learning environment. The Director will work with a wide-range of stakeholders (senior administrators, faculty, librarians, student affairs professionals, student leaders, professional staff, and student employees) to foster and encourage the development of retention opportunities based on data analysis that support the university’s mission of attracting a diverse student body in multiple programs and learning environments (on-campus, on-line and off-campus). Student Success and Retention is also a key contributor to Laurier’s commitment to ensuring that our undergraduate and graduate students understand the vital importance of pursuing their studies with integrity and are knowledgeable in how to uphold those values in the completion of assigned work and assessments. The ideal candidate will have progressive senior management experience in strategic enrolment management, student learning and development, data analysis, and retention.   

 

The Director will lead a multi-unit department that is student-centered and encourages the development of academic learning support services and programs that are developed in consultation with academic administrators, faculty, or librarians and are integrated, linked or embedded into the curriculum. The department includes interconnected units: Learning Skills and Development, Math and Statistics Learning Support, Transition and Learning Services, and Writing Services. The Director also leads and provides strategic direction to the Lift Off to Higher Education program that is delivered in the community and is funded by external donors.

 

This position provides leadership in a multi-campus environment, requiring regular interaction and collaboration with staff and stakeholders across all physical and virtual campus environments. The Director strives to ensure programs and services are delivered in an equitable manner and reflect the university’s priorities. Given the mandate on promoting student access, the Director will work with the Development Office and external partners in the community to strengthen Laurier’s impact in the community.

 

Accountabilities:

Strategic Planning and Management

  • Consults with various stakeholders to initiate, develop, evaluate, support, and/or implement programs or services designed to enhance student access, academic success, academic integrity and retention

  • Works with the Institutional Research Office to develop and generate retention reports that highlight student performance and trends for senior academic leaders that inform and identify retention opportunities

  • Uses data analysis collaborates with senior academic leaders to encourage policy changes that will increase student retention and reduce attrition

  • Empowers a highly effective student-centered professional staff team that encourages collaboration with various stakeholders on projects designed to support student success and retention

  • Seeks to maximize funding opportunities through internal and external program venues to enhance learning and retention initiatives and develops proposals that align with the university’s mandate

  • Works with the Vice Provost: Teaching and Learning and colleagues to support initiatives that advance and support the Laurier community with respect to experiential learning, universal design, online and remote learning, accessibility, and other scholarly pedagogical approaches that align with the university’s mission and mandate

  • Provides leadership, direction and management of reporting personnel within budget constraints

  • Develops tools to collect and assess data to determine trends and gaps in learning services initiatives. Using data and other supporting rationale, recommends or and supports the implementation of appropriate actions to improve student retention

  • Analyzes and summarizes activities within area of responsibility and reports on a regular basis student success and retention opportunities


Financial

  • Due to the dual funding nature of department, manages, develops, and presents annual budgets that reflect the priorities set by student affairs and university administration in a fiscally responsible manner

 

        Other

  • Seeks opportunities to lead or participate in the external professional organizations to acquire trends, best practices, and funding possibilities to enhance student access, student success, and retention initiatives at Laurier 

  • Initiates and maintains collaborative relationships with individuals and groups on campus that have an affiliated role with student access, student success and retention initiatives

  • Develops and maintains a good working knowledge of the university activities and priorities that can enhance student academic success and retention

Qualifications:

  • Advanced leadership skills with the demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders that fosters an environment to collaborate and address challenging issues normally acquired in a postsecondary environment

  • Master’s degree in adult/higher education or related discipline required. Doctorate in adult/higher education preferred

  • Several years of progressive leadership experience in Strategic Enrolment Management (recruitment, admissions, registration) preferred

  • Demonstrated experience of data analysis and report development using software programs such as COGNOS, Excel or other data analytic programs

  • Knowledge of the university infrastructure and institutional funding models is an asset

  • Demonstrated understanding of challenges faced by at-risk students, including knowledge of current research and best practices related to retention support and policy development

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service orientation with the ability to convey and obtain information amongst a variety of audiences including students, faculty, staff, and senior administrators

  • Progressive administrative experience including budget preparation/ management

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and empower staff and to deliver and implement new initiatives with partners or stakeholders

  • Development of successful grant proposals and an understanding of community foundations/donors is an asset

 

Compensation:

Position Grade: MG-3A

Rate of Pay: $95,711 -$119,638

 

Hours of Work:

This is a full-time, continuing position. The normal hours of work are 8:30AM-4:30PM. Monday to Friday.
