Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Canadian Student Recruitment, the Recruiter works as a member of the Recruitment and Admissions (R & A) team to ensure the enrolment management goals of the university at large are met. This team will implement strategic plans to advance the position of Wilfrid Laurier University nationally and internationally as a destination for high calibre students.
The Domestic Recruiter makes the first contact with a variety of audiences including the Guidance community, prospective applicants, and their parents visiting approximately 100 high schools as representative of Laurier. In this way, the recruitment and admissions office maintains a vital strategic link between prospective students and the Laurier community. The recruiter performs a variety of tasks relating specifically to student recruitment. This involves participation in a 4-week training period followed by extensive travel within Ontario. As university applications are due in early January, the emphasis on recruiting is in the fall months. The most important ingredient in Laurier’s past success in high school recruitment has been the ability of contract recruiters to integrate their recent university experience into every interaction they have with prospective students.
This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus. The role is a strategic component of the University’s overall enrolment strategy and is a significant contributor to the public image of the University. This position coordinates and supports events that take place throughout the year, which will require evening and some weekend work.
Accountabilities
Participation in Extensive Training Program (On Campus)
- Attends information meetings with key university stakeholders in order to develop extensive knowledge base of the university, including all programs and student services.
- Participates in a 4-week intensive public speaking training program with both individual and group critiques.
- Study and presentation practice is expected on evenings and weekends to meet demanding training deadlines.
- Responsible for communicating key points and addressing each student interest within a 20-minute presentation.
Coordination of School Visits and Travel Schedules
- Confirms all high school visits in partnership with the Recruitment Coordinator by directly contacting each high school prior to their scheduled visit.
- Arranges for travel and lodging in accordance with departmental and institutional spending policies.
Implementation of Fall Recruitment Plan (Off-campus)
- Travels extensively throughout Ontario independently and with the provincial Ontario University Regional Fair, speaking to groups of senior high school students, their parents, and high school administrators.
- Participates in the annual Ontario University Fair in Toronto (September 27 and 28)
- Participates in the Saturday Fall Open House events at the Milton (October 25) Waterloo (November 8) and Brantford (November 15) Campuses.
- Submits weekly visit statistics, and travel expense reports.
Qualifications
- University Degree, preferably from Wilfrid Laurier University.
- Knowledge of university programs.
- Willing to share recent personal university experience with prospective students.
- Demonstrated skill/ability in the following areas: written communication skills; dealing courteously and effectively with people; exercising good judgement and initiative; answering inquiries in a clear and concise manner.
- Experience with public speaking and giving delivering effective presentations.
- Effective interpersonal and public relations skills.
- Ability to work independently and set priorities.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to be away from home for extended period of time.
- Will be required to submit a “Vulnerable Sectors Police Check.”
- Valid “G” driver’s license with proven good driving record.
Hours of Work: This is a full-time, limited term position with an approximate end date of November 20, 2026. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to periods of high volume. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
This role requires daily in person attendance and is not eligible for a flexible work arrangement as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy).
Compensation:
Level: D
Rate of pay: $38.80 to $41.02 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $44.35 per hour.
Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
