Position Summary:
This course further defines the philosophical and theoretical foundations of music psychotherapy, comparing them within a framework based upon established psychotherapeutic theories such as psychodynamic, humanistic-existentialistic, and cognitive-behavioral theories. Music psychotherapy techniques are compared with verbal counseling interventions. A clinical framework based upon Group Analytic Music Therapy (GAMT) is introduced along with many other music psychotherapy approaches such as Analytical Music Therapy and Guided Imagery and Music. By placing music psychotherapy within the overall context of psychotherapy approaches, students learn to integrate the theories upon which their emerging clinical practice are based. They also learn psychodynamic influences and their impact on music therapy and integrate knowledge of key concepts common to all psychotherapy practice and therapeutic relationships. Students learn to establish a therapeutic relationship informed by their theoretical framework and integrate it with a consistent theory of change. They begin to integrate knowledge of how human problems develop and are understood differently based on the viewpoint of the therapist's theoretical orientation. They also begin to identify circumstances where therapy is contraindicated and recognize the benefits, limitations, and contraindications of differing music psychotherapy approaches and interventions. Students integrate knowledge of the impact of trauma on psychological functioning and its different meaning in different cultures. They learn skills for safe and effective trauma psychotherapy and how to provide effective instructional activities consistent with the therapist's practice and qualifications when needed for the client. Course materials include theory, clinical case examples, role-playing, and discussion. For the two-year MMT students, this course is closely linked and integrated to students' developing clinical work in MU504 - Music Therapy Placement I and is the prerequisite for MU508 -Music Psychotherapy Placement II. It equips 1- year MMT students for their clinical work.
