Position Summary:

The objective of this course is for students to acquire familiarity with the central themes of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s influential book, Philosophical Investigations (1953). Topics covered include selected issues in the philosophy of language and mind, as well as metaphysics and metaphilosophy. Special emphasis will be placed on Wittgenstein’s challenges to traditional theories of meaning and understanding, his distinctive set of conceptual tools (‘language-games’, ‘family resemblances’, ‘forms of life’, etc.), Wittgenstein’s much discussed critiques of private languages and rule-based accounts of language, and his view of philosophy as a form of therapy for ‘sicknesses of the understanding.’
