Position Summary

The Faculty of Education offers a two-year Bachelor of Education program that represents a collaboration between the university and a growing number of school boards. The program requires successful completion of a practicum component where teacher candidates integrate educational theory with practice and the successful completion of an Alternative Placement which occurs in a setting outside of the public education system. These placements provide Teacher Candidates with varied teaching experiences ongoing throughout the school year.

Accountable to the Manager of Experiential Learning, this position is responsible for the administration and ongoing development of the practicum component of the teacher education program in the Faculty of Education. The position requires knowledge of and adherence to Laurier University requirements and the Ontario College of Teachers Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession. Other duties beyond those described below may be assigned by the Manager of Experiential Learning.

The position requires the Placement Coordinator to collaborate and facilitate the interaction of several diverse groups, including WLU staff, faculty, and various departments, as well as Teacher Candidates, Associate Teachers, principals, school board representatives, teacher federations and other community partners. The position requires the incumbent to demonstrate professional educational knowledge of, and familiarity with, the school system in Ontario. Also, they must have credibility in the school system, including the knowledge and skills derived from experience in education, administration, communication, and technological areas.

Major functions of the position include candidate placement and support during placements, conflict resolution, enhancing partnerships with current stakeholders, partner engagement and communication, as well the expansion and development of practicum sites across Ontario. There may be some collaboration with faculty members to determine and monitor international placements.

 

Accountabilities

Administration and Coordination of Practicum Placements

Managing Year One and Year Two BEd Practicum Placements

  • Responsible for securing Partner School sites in conjunction with school board personnel, and working within varied school board processes
  • Recruiting Associate Teachers where necessary in conjunction with school board personnel working within various school board and principal assignment processes
  • Assigning Teacher Candidates to Partner School placements, while taking the following into consideration: teacher candidate needs and preferences, school availability, Faculty of Education considerations, and WLU collective agreements and procedures
  • Communicating with Partner School principals and Associate Teachers to provide information regarding practicum assignments, teacher candidate evaluations, and providing information regarding WLU policies and procedures
  • Ongoing communication with Teacher Candidates regarding all practicum information
  • Tracking B.Ed. placement requirements, including completion and receipt of practicum evaluations and attendance (including possible work under an OCT Temporary Certificate)
  • Responsible for ensuring that required documentation is accurate, current, and complete

Managing Alternative Placements

  • Communicating with teacher candidates and placement supervisors to provide information regarding placements, and provide information regarding WLU policies and procedures
  • Distributing, reviewing, and approving placement documentation including the Laurier Experiential Learning Placement Agreement and the Laurier Pre-Placement Safety Review and Declaration and Laurier Confidentiality Agreements (as required)
  • Tracking placement requirements, including completion and receipt of placement hours and evaluations
  • Responsible for ensuring that required documentation is accurate, current, and complete
  • Determining and monitoring international placements in collaboration with faculty members

Contributing to and monitoring the quality of the student experience

  • Responsible for the communication of Ontario College of Teachers regulations, school board policies, and Teachers Federation policies such that they are adhered to by all parties involved in practicum activities
  • Identifying and managing issues related to practicum, including resolution of interpersonal and/or professional conflicts by following WLU and Faculty of Education guidelines, policies, and procedures, in consultation with Manager of Experiential Learning, Dean/Associate Dean, Associate Teachers, Partner School principals, as appropriate
  • Advising and problem-solving issues regarding practicum policies and procedures with Teacher Candidates, often regarding sensitive or confidential matters

Administration

Documentation and Data Management

  • Communicating, collecting, and ensuring compliance of incoming required Teacher Candidate onboarding documentation (e.g., Vulnerable Sector Screen, WSIB forms, declarations, Health & Safety training certificates and other required forms via Navigator and other means)
  • Entering Practicum course grades according to university requirements
  • Coordinating the review and update of Practicum Steps (Navigator) with appropriate WLU staff annually
  • Setup and ongoing maintenance of Navigator (practicum and placement database records):
    1. Additions/Deletions of Teacher Candidate, Associate Teacher, Principal, and Partner School records
    2. Updates to Teacher Candidate records at each Practicum change along with ongoing changes throughout year
    3. Communicating Teacher Candidate access and their required input/updates to Navigator
  • Ensuring documentation requirements of related WLU departments are met and their processes are followed (e.g., Career Centre, SHERM, Laurier International)
    1. Maintaining organized and secure document storage for non-Navigator documents: Contracts, Safety Forms, Confidentiality Agreements, Action Plans, etc.

Faculty Event Support

  • Assisting with planning and implementation of BEd Orientation and Year Two Professional Learning Activities as pertaining to the practicum component
  • Reviewing and revising policies and procedures relating to practicum placements in consultation with Manager of Experiential Learning and BEd Coordinator
  • Updating policies and procedures for the practicum section of the Bachelor of Education Practicum Handbook and Alternative Placement Handbook
  • Identifying, planning, and delivering practicum-related professional development activities for Associate Teachers/Principals, in consultation with Manager of Experiential Learning and B.Ed. Coordinator

Committee Participation

Participation on Faculty of Education committees, as appropriate for the role and program responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Teacher Education Advisory Committee
  • Teacher Education Liaison Committee
  • BEd Program and Curriculum Committee
  • BEd Practicum Committee(s)
  • Divisional Council

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent degree

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of administrative experience in a public JK – 12 academic and/or other school system environment
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Curriculum and Ministry of Education and Ontario College of Teachers regulations
  • Experience with mentorship/supervision of classroom teachers.

  • Ability to learn and utilize technology to enhance practicum administration (e.g., Navigator)

 

This position has been deemed eligible for educational equivalencies.

 

Hours of Work: This is a part-time, 2-year limited term role. The hours of work are variable with a total of 17.5 hours each week.

This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement, as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy). All arrangement must be approved by the direct manager. In-person attendance for events as required to meet operational needs, is expected. On occasion, this scheudle may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements.

 

 

Compensation:

Level: E

Rate of Pay: $42.32 to $44.74 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $48.37 per hour. Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
